What is the Learning Assistant Initiative (LAI)?

The Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning (CITL) is developing the “Preparing Future Faculty and Professionals (PFFP)” program, which targets master’s and doctoral students engaged in teaching assistant (TA) duties.

In AY 2025, the program will focus on two key initiatives aimed at Preparing Future Professionals (PFP):

  1. A research and development on TA training in STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics)
  2. The development of e-learning materials for TA training.

This initiative will continue over the next three years, with the goal of completing the PFFP program by the end of AY 2027, which marks the final year of Institute of Science Tokyo Fourth Medium-Term Plans. TA training development and evaluation will be conducted throughout this period.

Recruitment: Learning Assistant Initiative (LAI), AY 2025

CITL is now accepting applications for the Learning Assistant Initiative (LAI), a program in which selected students will collaborate with early-career faculty and staff in CITL to work with the development of training materials for the Preparing Future Professionals (PFP) program.

LAIs will engage in research and development activities related to PFP training, working in one of two specialized teams: the STEM Education Team and the Content Development Team. Each team will contribute to advancing the design, implementation, and evaluation of training materials for the PFP program.

STEM Education Team

Under the guidance of CITL faculty members, LAIs will investigate the duties by TAs in the basic science and technology courses at Science Tokyo. They will organize the knowledge and skills required for TAs in each discipline and propose corresponding training content. The main tasks are as follows:

  • Investigation and analysis of TA duties: Assess the current state of TAs at Science Tokyo and clarify the knowledge and skills required for TAs.
  • Proposal of TA training content: Plan, design, develop, and evaluate TA training programs.
  • Support for educational workshops: Assist in the organization and management of faculty development (FD) and staff development (SD) workshops conducted by CITL, as well as the planning and operation of TA training sessions.

Content Development Team

The team will be responsible for planning, developing, and managing online instructional materials for the PFP training program. Necessary skills for developing online materials, such as video shooting and editing, will be acquired through hands-on practical exercises and on-the-job training (OJT). The main tasks are as follows:

  • Production of online instructional materials: Designing the content structure, shooting and editing videos, and uploading materials to the Learning Management System (LMS).
  • Support for content management: Assisting in the administration of LMS courses and responding to participant inquiries.
  • Support for educational workshops: Assisting in the organization and management of faculty development (FD) and staff development (SD) workshops conducted by CITL, as well as the planning and operation of TA training sessions.

For further details, please refer to the application guidelines.
